A Look At Our English Language Arts Curriculum

Medina City Schools utilizes an approach to English Language Art instruction that is guided by evidence based practices to support all learners. The District recognizes that developing the skills to be a successful reader and writer is essential to supporting students throughout their educational career. Through high quality, evidence based instructional practices and assessments that allows teachers to monitor student growth, our elementary staff is committed to ensuring all students develop a strong foundation as readers and writers.

Medina City Schools utilizes Amplify’s Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum from kindergarten through 5th grade.  The CKLA curriculum introduces students to phonemic awareness and phonics skills in a sequence that helps them to successfully read the words in books. The curriculum also incorporates an approach to building knowledge; when students understand the topics they are reading, it increases their ability to comprehend the text. While building strong reading skills, students are also provided instruction to develop writing skills aligned to their reading instruction. By incorporating research based instructional practices, the curriculum supports students in becoming strong readers, writers, and thinkers.
