District to Add Gifted Services

In partnership with staff, students, parents and community, the District has worked to create our Strategic Plan launched in June, 2017. The goal of the plan is to meet the needs of students but also meet the expectations of our community. In May, 2017, the community showed their support by passing a 5.2 mill Substitute Levy which has allowed the District to move forward with the entire Strategic Plan. One of the important outcomes was to increase gifted services.


Medina City Schools currently has 1,500 students throughout the District who are identified as gifted. Due to previous budgetary constraints, not all of these students are able to receive services. Currently, the District has one half time teacher for gifted students at each of the seven elementary buildings. Implementation of this plan would involve adding a full-time gifted teacher at each middle school and a half time gifted teacher at the high school. Currently, no gifted teachers serve at these levels. This is an added cost to the District, however it is already budgeted into our five year forecast as part of our Strategic Plan. This plan is slated to be put in place for next fall and will allow for additional Inquiry Based Learning opportunities.


Other electives classes are also being reviewed by high school staff, administrators and school counselors which will provide additional opportunities for our students. A few of the proposed courses are: College Algebra, Advanced Placement U.S. History, French 2 and Biomedical Sciences. These are all pending Board of Education review and approval. French 1 was added to the high school curriculum for the 2018-2019 school year.


We are working collaboratively with our staff, students, parents and community to create an educational atmosphere that is beneficial to all Medina City School students in an effort to continue to Move Medina Forward.
