Claggett Middle School Student Places in Patriot's Pen Essay Contest
Patriot's Pen is a nationwide, VFW-sponsored youth essay competition which provides students with the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. All entries begin at the local Post level. The competition is open to students enrolled in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
This year's theme was "Why I Honor the American Flag." Mike Weyand, social studies teacher, Claggett Middle School, had fifteen students participate in the contest. Gordon Meldrum, sixth grader, came in second place at the local level and earned a $500 scholarship.
