Medina High School Flag Finds Its Way To Antarctica

Medina High School had the opportunity to leave its mark on the other side of the world. Captain Keith Ropella, brother-in-law of high school biology teacher Jess Niemantsverdreit and commander of the USCG Cutter Polar Star, the United States’ only heavy icebreaker which was commissioned in 1976, took a Medina flag with him on his annual trip to Antarctica. Each year, the Polar Star travels to McMurdo Station, Antarctica to lead Operation Deep Freeze and break miles of ice up to 21 feet thick.
