Mathematics Overview
-
The vision for Mathematics programming at Medina City Schools is to vertically build toward increased conceptual understanding of mathematics. Students who qualify may begin high school mathematics, Algebra I (one-year acceleration) and Geometry (two-year acceleration) in middle school.
MCS mathematics is predicated on the Eight (8) Mathematical Practices based on the Ohio Standards for Mathematics. These Eight Practices aim to engage students beyond rote memorization of formulas and algorithms and bring mathematical study into a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical thinking. At Medina City Schools, we intend to foster inquisitive, tenacious, and perseverant mathematical thinkers.
Eight Standards of Mathematical Practice:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
Mathematics is a State tested subject in middle school grades 6-8 and high school grades 9-10 (Algebra I & Geometry).
