Faith Soria, Garfield Elementary, Fourth Grade, IT Teacher for 2016-2017

On Friday, May 12, 2017, the Department of Pupil Services presented the 2017 Inclusion Teacher (IT) of the Year Award.  This award is given to teachers who provide exemplary service to students with special needs in their classroom.  The motto for this award is, “You know IT when you see IT.”

This year’s recipient is Faith Soria, fourth grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School.  Soria has taken inclusion beyond its definition making sure to promote the success of each student that comes into contact with her.  She meets on a regular basis with special education staff members to modify curriculum, adjust schedules, and discuss programming for students.  Soria is able to plan and reflect on her teaching allowing her to adjust her lessons for her students to both challenge and support them in their learning.  Her classroom is an inviting place with a variety of materials across various levels for students in her class to learn.

As special education needs change throughout the school year, Soria is flexible and readily welcomes students to join her class so they may benefit from her philosophy and grow as learners.  She has the unique ability to make all students feel as if they are the most important student in her classroom.
